Tips While Traveling in Anguilla

Back to Diving in Anguilla    |

Currency

The Eastern Caribbean Dollar EC$2.70=US$1 is the local currency. US dollars are widely accepted throughout the island. Prices on menus, in hotels and for activities are generally quoted in US dollars. ATM machines dispense both; local and US currency.

Several ATMs are conveniently located throughout the Island; two at National Bank of Anguilla (NBA), Scotia Bank, Caribbean Commercial Bank, First Caribbean International Bank, Ashley & Sons Grocery, Island Gases Gas Station at Long Path, Romcan Grocery South Hill, Wallblake Airport, Tomac Plaza Parking Lot Water Swamp, Sydans at Sandy Ground and West End Road next to Caribbean Fantasy Boutique.

Other

Electricity is 110 AC voltage, the same as in the US.
Water is potable; however, bottled water is widely available.
Dress is casual. It is generally advisable to bring a light sweater or shawl for evenings.
There are no nude beaches on Anguilla; topless or nude sunbathing is illegal.
There are no casinos. Travelers should be aware of their surroundings and take normal precautions such as locking doors and securing valuables.
Water temperatures are in the upper 70º to lower 80º. Optimum diving conditions are in the summer months when visibility is at its highest and there are little or no ground seas.

Driving

Driving is on the left.
To rent a car on the island, a valid driver’s license from the resident country is needed to obtain a local driver’s license. Local driver’s licenses are available at car rental agencies and cost US$20. Rental cars are readily available; however reservations for ‘in season’ car rentals and children’s car seats should be made in advance.
